Gratitude, Heads up, and Congratulations

Gratitude

Our porch chats at the rectory went very well. Thank you to everyone who made the trip to the prairie for socializing, conversation, and growth in mutual understanding and affection. When it centered on changes in the parishes, our conversation was “lively” at times, but charity prevailed and I was pleased with the candor and goodwill of everyone who attended. It is good to simply “be” with one another from time to time, and the spirit of gratitude only continues to grow within me as I serve these parishes and get to know with greater familiarity my people (or, rather, God’s people whom He has entrusted to my care). In fact, since asking all of you to invite Fr. Jacquemin and I into your homes last year, you have not disappointed! Virtually every week we have an invitation to the home of a parishioner and their family for a meal, and this has been a delight. Thank you all for your warmth and hospitality!

Heads Up

Heads up for a few new things in the coming weeks.

  1. Nominations for the Family Council must be submitted by Monday, May 30th. If you have someone in mind, be sure to submit their name here.
  2. We will have Server Training on June 2 and June 8. This is mandatory for all new servers and any servers who missed last year’s training, or any servers who want a refresher. Participants only need to attend one session; please check here for more details.
  3. Along with this, we will be implementing the use of communion patens (the metal plates with handles used by the servers during the Communion Rite). This has been done in the past, and in 2004 the Holy See instructed, per the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, that “the Communion-plate for the Communion of the faithful should be retained, so as to avoid the danger of the sacred host or some fragment of it falling” (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 93). Beyond practicality, the paten communicates a deeper sense of reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist and emphasizes its precious and sacred nature. We will go over use of the paten at training and make a quick video for all of our current servers so they will know how to properly use them. Stay tuned for that!
  4. Finally, on June 19th we will have a Corpus Christi Procession through town following the 11:30am Mass. Everyone is encouraged to attend, and our First Communicants are invited to dress in their First Communion clothes and scatter rose petals in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Though it falls on Fathers’ Day this year, I hope many will attend as it is a beautiful testament to our faith in and devotion to our Lord Jesus present in the Most Holy Eucharist. More details here.

Congratulations

Lastly, congratulations to Fr. Bernard Knapke, O.P., who was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood of Jesus Christ on May 21st. Praise God! It is a gift to the Church and a cause for rejoicing when a man says “yes” to the call of the Lord to follow Him as His priest, and when a priest arises from our own parish it is an especially joyous occasion. Below are some photos of Fr. Bernard and his family taken during the weekend of his ordination. He will return to celebrate Masses of Thanksgiving the weekend of June 4 and 5 and we are looking forward to welcoming him back and expressing our gratitude to almighty God for this happy moment in the life of our parishes. May God bless you in the week ahead and may Mother Mary lead you more deeply into the Sacred and Merciful Heart of Jesus. I remain,

Affectionately yours in Christ,

Fr. Hess
